Inhoud: An analytical and experimental investigation is presented for electric tubular induction motor having a rotor consisting of alternate rings of copper and steel mounted on a solid-steel core. A one dimensional-field analysis is carried out to study the effect of the different rotor parameters on the thrust. The analysis is based on replacing the steel and copper rings by an equivalent thin inhomogeneous conducting sheet with conductivity varying periodically in the axial direction. The field equations in the air gap are solved in terms of the electric field intensity. The effect of the different rotor parameters on the thrust is investigated. It is found that there exists an optimum width of the rotor copper ring for which the force / weight ratio of the motor is maximum. A motor with composite rotors having different copper to steel ratios is constructed and tested. The agreement between the experimental and analytical results is adequate for practical purposes.
