Jaar: 2001
Inhoud: This article examines the conduct of amphibious operations throughout the twentieth century and identifies the inherent value of amphibious raids by highlighting the benefits they can offer. The author contends that as we enter a period in which expeditionary warfare is of increasing importance, and with it operations in the littoral, it is timely to review the utility of this form of warfare. It is argued that the amphibious raid is a potentially valuable tool of politicians because it can offer a means to communicate potent signals to an adversary. For the military commander, the amphibious raid provides an opportunity to exploit an exposed sea flank to attack the enemy's will. The article concludes that as the ability of amphibious forces to project power deep inland from the littoral increases in the twenty-first century, so too will the range of scenarios for the employment of amphibious raids. However, the author notes that such raids will remain the preserve of the skilled and audacious, rather than the timid.
