'Taking genesis out of the Bible': Hugh Gaitskell, clause IV and labour's socialist myth

Titel: 'Taking genesis out of the Bible': Hugh Gaitskell, clause IV and labour's socialist myth
Auteur: Jones, Tudor
Verschenen in: Contemporary British history
Paginering: Jaargang 11 (1997) nr. 2 pagina's 1-23
Jaar: 1997
Inhoud: This article aims to view Hugh Gaitskell's failed undertaking of 1959-60 to revise Clause IV of his party's constitution within the intellectual-historical context of revisionist thought in the Labour party during the 1950s. Gaitskell's own contributions to that body of ideas will be examined - particularly with regard to the contentious issue of public ownership. His conduct over Clause IV - the embodiment of the traditional socialist reverence for public ownership - will then be considered as an attempt to translate into an official literary form his own revisionist stance on that central doctrinal question. Attention will be focused, too, on what turned out to be the unsatisfactory compromise of his new statement of Labour's aims, his 'New Testament', as it soon became described. Finally, the main tactical and strategic flaws inherent in Gaitskell's undertaking will be analysed. From that historical perspective some broad comparisons will be drawn with Tony Blair's successful campaign 35 years later to revise Clause IV, instigated in radically changed political and economic circumstances.
