The Future of Socialism has frequently been represented as a 'Gaitskellite manifesto'. This article argues that our understanding and appreciation of Crosland's 1956 work is severely compromised if it is viewed solely in the context of the internecine warfare between Labour's left and right wings between the mid 1950s and early 1960s. Crosland first articulated many of his critical arguments long before the faction fighting of the 1950s, and The Future of Socialism was as much a child of the austerity decade of the 1940s as it was of the 'age of affluence' after 1951. Moreover, Crosland's post-materialist agenda was not exclusively 'right-wing' , but was shared by figures across the party spectrum, including Richard Crossman. |
