Inhoud: During the 1950s the institutional form of academic scientific research in Britain was in flux. This paper analyses the debates on this subject, arguing that the increased expenditure on science strained the relations between universities and government departments. One project, the construction of the Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope, is examined in detail for two reasons: first, it illustrates the 'strains' (partially resolved in this case through the fashioning of the instrument as an object of national prestige), and second because its problems (along with experience with the National Institute for Research in Nuclear Science) form the background for proposals in the late 1950s and early 1960s to centralise scientific facilities in national institutes. The portrayal of British science in the first post-war decades is contrasted with other accounts.
