This article discusses the security of the Republic of China on Taiwan, emphasizing U.S.-Taiwan relations since the passage of the Taiwan Relations Act and United States arms transfers to Taiwan. Diplomatic and military relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China on Taiwan and between the United States and the two Chinas are analyzed in the context of East Asian political and security developments. The article concludes by noting that Taiwan's security is not now in jeopardy but that the future diminished role for the United States in East Asia will require Taiwan to undertake measures to ensure its ability to decide its status free from coercion by Mainland China. |
