Comparing the strategic environment of the world of 1950 with that of 1980, there are more similarities than differences. With the benefit of hindsight, we can see that an American image of weakness and indecision very probably contributed to the decision to start the Korean War (whether by Russia, China, North Korea, or combinations of these). One major difference in the situations then and now is that the USSR and China are adversaries rather than allies, but there remains the key question of what image the United States projects in the East Asian region. Unless the post-Vietnam trend of disengagement is reversed; there could be a repeat of the pre-1950 perception that the United States would not act to resist aggression in the Korean peninsula. |
