Inhoud: Staff reduction is an ominous issue to community college faculty today. As more and more colleges face the necessity of reducing staff, the question of criteria is raised: seniority or meritocracy? The study surveyed faculty at three Michigan community colleges as to their attitudes about the criteria for staff reduction. Responses to the questions were analyzed in terms of a number of variables, such as sex, age, length of service, unionized, and so on. It was found that the variables reached the level of significance in only a few situations. The responses indicated that faculty do not favor seniority over meritocracy as a basis for staff reduction. Responding to several hypothetical methods for reducing staff, faculty choose a plan based on evaluation as the method with which they most clearly agreed.
