From a national survey of selected community colleges and a review of research and debate, the authors identify issues, implications, and directions for college administrators addressing their colleges' use of part-time faculty. The key recommendation is that colleges take serious steps toward improving the utilization and integration of part-time faculty. The authors then identify strategies for improving community college part-time faculty use. Recommended strategies include (a) recruiting, selecting, and hiring part-time faculty with clear purpose and direction; (b) requiring part-time faculty participation in substantial orientation activities and providing faculty support structures; (c) requiring part-time faculty participation in professional development; (d) integrating part-time faculty into the life of the institution; (e) evaluating part-time faculty performance; and (f) providing equitable pay schedules. Study results indicate that these strategies improve the relationship between part-time faculty and the institution and part-time faculty performance. |
