As many faculty members near retirement age, colleges need to recruit, hire, and retain the best and brightest faculty available. This article examines how issues of scholarship and effective teaching; local, regional, and national recruitment; and encouraging women and minority applicants are important. It offers suggestions for screening committees on how to conduct an effective search, as well as how to hire systematically rather than incrementally. Often positions are filled to meet the immediate needs of a program, department, or division. Institutions are encouraged to have a vision of what the future faculty should be. Community colleges, now challenged to fill vacancies, must prepare for the next century by choosing the faculty of the future.
