INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES IN THE MULTICULTURAL CLASSROOM

Auteur: McLeod, Darrell
Verschenen in: Community college journal of research and practice

Jaar: 1996
Inhoud: Teaching well in a multicultural setting is an enormous challenge for even the most talented of instructors. It is rare that a practitioner takes the time to question what culture is being propagated in the classroom; whose values and beliefs are being transmitted, validated, and asserted; whose perception of the world is being portrayed as legitimate; and what the underlying purpose of the curriculum is. The effective instructor in a multicultural classroom provides learning context, in all subject areas. A link between the subject and the learners must be established by the teacher. Literature-based instruction, thematic units, project-based learning, and alternative evaluation methods using learner portfolios with self- and peer assessment help establish the important link. Instructors who do become expert at teaching in a multicultural setting become social activists; they have no other choice. They become promoters and validaters of culture.
