This article reviews current uses of technology in the training of part-time faculty in U.S. community colleges. Current uses range from the use of print and visual media for orienting part-time faculty members to training part-time faculty in how to teach and how to use technology within their classroom teaching. Other than the traditional print medium, video is most often included in both orientation and professional development activities. Video is frequently used in training and mentoring programs that tape teacher performances for critique. Recommendations for further incorporating technology into part-time faculty programs and services are provided. Teleconferences that provide training in teaching and in using classroom technology offer viable tools for professional development of part-time faculty. Some colleges produce or make these teleconferences available to their part-time faculty, incorporating them into professional development activities. Interactive technologies, which combine video and computer software, also offer an alternative. Various existing interactive programs, primarily in the teacher education area, are listed and described in this article, and new models of education based on interactive technologies are discussed. Existing software limits the application of these new models, but continued development in software will expand opportunities. Expanding the use of current technologies to orient, train, and support part-time faculty is emphasized.
