Many states now require student outcomes assessment in mandated accountability reports. Assessment techniques such as standardized testing, curriculum-embedded faculty assessment, and portfolio evaluation can be complex and costly. This article describes how an institutional-research based approach to accountability reporting evolved in response to Maryland's accountability requirements. Specific examples of how institutional research data were applied to the development of accountability plan objectives are described. The article concludes by identifying several issues still to be resolved in utilizing this approach. |
