Inhoud: The purpose of this study was to survey associate degree-granting institutions in the southern region to determine (a) the extent to which the components of institutional effectiveness were currently being practiced, (b) the degree of importance placed on the effectiveness components by institutional professionals, and (c) any discrepancies between reported practice and perceived importance of the components of effectiveness. The study was limited to Level I institutions accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools which include community, junior, and technical colleges, both public and private, located in eleven southern states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Data were gathered by administering a 40 item questionnaire, with two seven point scales for each item, to the chief executive officer, a randomly selected middle-line administrator, and a randomly selected faculty member in each of 80 randomly selected institutions accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Complete sets of responses were received from 60 colleges yielding a usable return of 75 percent.
