Maximum likelihood estimates are derived for the cell probabilities of a 2×2 contingency table when only the marginal row and column totals can be observed. The resulting MLE always involves at least one zero probability. This finding supports a conjecture by Fisher that the marginal totals do not contain important information regarding the individual cell probabilities. The issue of testing for marginal homogeneity in this situation is briefly discussed. |
