“Populism” was a major force in Kansas politics in the 1890s. This essay uses the analysis of over seventy speeches to reveal the transcending power of the “agrarian myth” during the early part of the decade. The analysis also indicates the limits of strategies of transcendence as woman suffrage and prohibition became divisive and deciding elements in the election failure of the Populists in 1894. |
