Mass transfer efficiency models for plate and packed columns in distillation applications were examined. The influence of operating conditions, hardware parameters and physical properties on the height equivalent of a theoretical plate (HETP) were investigated. Recommendations on the choice of packings or trays were developed for different cases to maximize column efficiency. Some inconsistencies in the efficiency models for plate and packed columns reported in the literature were also discussed. |
