The Dutch TNO Research Institute for Environmental Hygiene measured performance of individual gas-fired central heating systems in houses on an estate in Holland. The high-efficiency (HE) boilers achieved energy savings overall of around 18 per cent compared with conventional boilers. However, it was shown that an unadjusted radiator system can raise heating costs by 30 per cent with HE boilers. After such adjustment, and after modifying the regulating system and adding insulation to the storage cylinder, installations with HE boilers used 21 per cent less gas on average for hot water in summer than those with conventional boilers. |
