'Educational research' is here considered not as a cultural phenomenon or practice but as a sui generis enterprise with a certain logic of its own. The subject-matter of such research must, logically, be learning: the promotion of a certain kind of good (knowledge and mastery) which must be distinguished from political or social goods. It is argued that effective learning depends primarily on the personal qualities of the educator: that should be the main area or subject-matter for research, and it requires a mixture of conceptual analysis and psychological insight. Questions about the value of different kinds of learning are also central to educational research, though now commonly neglected by researchers. All this suggests a radically different agenda for the enterprise. |
