The current moves by the Government to establish a National Curriculum will be directed and managed by the civil servants in the Department of Education and Science. Their present deliberations are highly confidential, but the control they exercised over the curriculum in the early decades of this century can be gauged through a study of confidential internal memoranda of the Board of Education in the Public Record Office. Two case studies—of geography in secondary schools, and of geography as an advanced subject—are presented before comparisons are made with the successful campaign to gain recognition for the subject within the Government's National Curriculum. |
