The task of learning paired-associate lists over three learning and test trials formed the basis of a test for all-or-none learning. The experimental and control groups received a new list on each trial but the major experimental condition was that, for the experimental group, repetition of pairs unlearned on the prior trial was retained over all trials. Ss were 60 undergraduate students fulfilling a course requirement. Under the incremental strength theory the experimental group should have performed significantly better. Results, significant at the 1% level, supported this theory. Emphasis was on considerations of method particularly control of level of difficulty of pairedassociates. Results supported the contention that all-or-none learning is limited as a special phenomenon of incremental learning. |
