On the validity of the s-r mediation explanation of the ease of reversal concept shifts

Titel: On the validity of the s-r mediation explanation of the ease of reversal concept shifts
Auteur: Halford, Graeme S.
Verschenen in: Australian journal of psychology
Paginering: Jaargang 21 (1969) nr. 1 pagina's 49-54
Jaar: 1969-04-01
Inhoud: It is argued that the S-R mediation theory of concept attainment does not explain the observation that reversal concept shifts are performed more readily than non-reversal shifts by human subjects of more than 5 years of age. An unspecified mediating response to a stimulus attribute can be extinguished to stimuli having that attribute and associated to other stimuli. This means that a non-reversal concept shift can be effected as readily as a reversal shift by subjects who behave in a mediational manner, so long as only 2 values of each stimulus dimension are used. In general the proposition that mediators are not extinguished in a reversal shift but are extinguished in a non-reversal shift depends on unrecognized assumptions. The empirical findings are important, but their significance has been obliterated by a premature explanation which has impeded rather than promoted research.
