This paper deals with criticisms Knopfelmacher and Mischel have made of behaviouristic assumptions about the kind of basic data and the explanation form appropriate to psychology. It is argued that these criticisms fail to achieve their purpose because they are based on unwarranted generalizations, and because they contain mistaken claims about the connection between “intelligibility” or “Verstehen” and the logic of explanation. The advantages of behaviouristic assumptions are briefly examined by relating them to the aims of scientific explanation. |
