The 16PF was used to study personality change following ECT in a group of depressed in-patients. Successfully treated depressed patients showed considerable discrepancy between pre- and post-ECT profiles, while unsuccessfully treated patients and normal subjects showed little change over an equivalent time. From the patient group profile six factors were suggested as important in depression: low ego strength, low surgency, high superego, high premsia, high guilt proneness and high ergic tension. Of these six factors only surgency and ergic tension showed significant change following ECT. |
