The question of wealth gains from US bank takeovers is addressed. Our approach differs from most other studies in that we examine simultaneously the size-adjusted, combined returns of both the acquiring and targeted banks. Based on 107 bank takeovers, we find that, on average, bank takeovers do create(as opposed to transfer) wealth. The wealth created is statistically significant and economically non-trivial. Consistent with theory, cross sectional econometric analysis statistically attributes the created wealth to efficiency and geographic diversification. The results are robust for the sub-group of takeovers with positive wealth gains. Efficiency gains tend to occur in relatively small takeovers; gains from geographic diversification tend to occur in relatively large takeovers, given the gains are positive |
