This article surveys the contribution of Edith Charlotte Onians (1866-1955) to Australian social reform, both in her work as the organiser of the Newsboys' Society, a philanthropic organisation for disadvantaged male youth in Melbourne, and in her advocacy of welfare support for needy children and youths, and impoverished urban families. Her efforts to stimulate thought about policy change in the problem areas of youth homelessness, youth employment, juvenile delinquency and urban planning are given particular consideration. The roles that she played in social action in the first half of the twentieth century are evaluated. |
