Inhoud: Social workers, as part of their education, are required to show competence in interpersonal skills and a depth of understanding about human relations and organisational dynamics. It is thus surprising that they have such a low level of involvement in consultancy work, especially with in-house programs offered to industry. Are we too involved in day-to-day issues? Are we reluctant to break new ground? There is an increasing recognition by employee and employer groups that much greater focus needs to be given to employee development. This focus is now underpinned by the requirement for larger organisations to meet their training levy obligations to the Commonwealth Government. Interpersonal skills development is frequently recognised as a major part of that development. The purpose of this paper is to outline possible reasons for this lack of involvement and then to investigate strategies designed to increase the involvement of social workers with in-house programs in both the public and private sectors.
