The paper presents the findings of a longitudinal study of cohabitation which was carried out by the author during the late 1970s and the 1980s. The paper explores the perception cohabiters have of their lifestyle, and examines the changes which have occurred in the attitudes towards and practice of cohabitation over time. It outlines briefly the three major steps of development of this lifestyle and comments on the cohabitants' perception of cohabitation as a system per se and as an alternative to marriage. |
