The author has grown increasingly concerned about the notion of pathological grief and its application to the bereaved. Definition of grief and pathological grief are explored along with the tendency to prescribe appropriate grieving behaviour. An alternative perspective, that of creative coping is offered as an interpretation for this behaviour. In a time when we have fewer rituals for our grief we must anticipate greater need in the bereaved to 'create' rituals of their own. Examples are drawn from the ritualised practices of Islam, Judaism and from the author's practice. |
