Although the term “drag” is well known and its function within the entertainment world has been recognized for centuries, transvestism has only come to the attention of the community comparatively recently in Australia within the last decade. Earlier notice to the public was through brief accounts in the more popular magazines and newspapers, most of these bordering on the sensational, and describing in lurid detail the accounts of sex changes that had little to do with the average transvestite. There still exists a great deal of ignorance regarding the extent and nature of the phenomenon; however, in the last three years it has received far more serious attention and study, mainly instigated by the Seahorse Club of Australia. The difficulty of obtaining information and literature, a problem that existed for many years, has largely been resolved and more is now obtainable, mainly from Seahorse. The issue of professional advice still remains, however, as there are few places within the medical or social service areas where counselling is readily available.
