In the emerging environmental forensics laboratory industry, the test substance that has come to be known as PS-6 gasoline has been utilized incorrectly as a 1984/1985 vintage unleaded gasoline. Published data available in the peer-reviewed technical literature do not support the time of formulation of PS-6 gasoline as 1984/1985. Peer-reviewed literature data indicate that the test substance that came to be known as PS-6 gasoline was formulated in a single batch in 1977, using various refinery streams that were typically manufactured in the time frame starting earlier in the 1970s and continuing into 1977. Consequently, environmental forensic age-dating of subsurface gasoline contamination using PS-6 gasoline as a benchmark assumed to represent industry standard manufacturing output in 1984/1985 is scientifically unreliable. |
