Inhoud: Engineering laboratories have long been avalued element within the higher educationcurriculum, providing an effective learningvehicle that is popular with students.Unfortunately they can be expensive foracademics to operate and assess, andtime-consuming for the students whoundertake them. This paper describes onepossible approach to make laboratoryactivities more efficient by activating thetraditional instruction sheet using MicrosoftWord documents and their companionVisual Basic for Applications developmentenvironment.Experiments in basic electrical sciencehave been activated in a trial. The mainadditional features provided include built-inhelp, formative feedback, and automatedassessment. For those with previous VisualBasic or general computing experiencea relatively modest development effort isrequired.Evaluation has taken place with a largeclass of foundation year students. Bycareful observation of the developmentprocess and trial operation, togetherwith student views expressed through aquestionnaire and informally, the meritsof the approach have been considered.Positive observations include improvedassessment efficiency for staff anda productive learning experience forstudents. On the negative side, technicalissues, associated with the informationtechnology infrastructure and therobustness of the assessment, areconcerns. Given a sympathetic environmentthe technique may have potential for wideradoption.
