Inhoud: This article addresses one of the important issues of whether or not the presence of an NFL team in a market area increases economic value in that market area. Even though the impact of the presence of one or more professional sports teams in a community has been studied repeatedly, the research to date had not looked specifically at the impact on any one industry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of an NFL team's play dates on lodging industry revenue (i.e., occupancy, average daily rate, revenue per available room and total dollar impact) in the market area. Overall, there seems to be a positive impact for the industry in most market areas on lodging variables. Working with data provided by Smith Travel Research, results of our analysis indicated that the lodging industry exhibited a positive dollar impact in twenty-eight of the thirty-one NFL market areas. Some interesting negative response is discussed in the paper. In addition, marketing implications are discussed to illustrate how the lodging industry and other tourism businesses can develop techniques to enhance revenue generation in NFL cities. The authors also present some caveats for analyzing lodging impact in a market area and some insights into future research needed for creating useful managerial actions from lodging impact analyses.
