During much of the 18th and 19th centuries, women's choices about family roles, marriage, childbearing and childrearing were largely determined by the social and material conditions of the time. While this is still true during the 20th century, widespread shifts brought about by technology, industrialization, and legal changes have created a context for tremendous change in women's social and family roles. This article exmaines the cultural and historical contexts of women's roles in families during the early part of the 20th century, and considers the implications of those contexts and the changes in them for family therapy. |
