A qualitative study was undertaken of 31 self-selected egalitarian couples with children. Using "grounded theory" to generate themes, couple were interviewed to discover the role of the perception of fairness in marriage; how it is defined by couples attempting to live by an egalitarian ideology, and how this perception is developed and maintained over time. The relationship themes found were divided into those related to the outcome of having a perception of fairness, and the conditions leading to a fairness perception. Equity theory is used to explain the results and add to our understanding of the way perceptions of fairness are evidenced in day-to-day interactions. Excerpts from the interviews are offered and implications for therapists are discussed. |
