Acquisition of French Language Monographic Materials

Title: Acquisition of French Language Monographic Materials
Author: Coscarelli, William F.
Chalaron, Peggy P.
Appeared in: Collection management
Paging: Volume 8 (1986) nr. 1 pages 45-53
Year: 1986-05-28
Contents: A study of French monographic acquisitions at the Louisiana State University Middleton Library was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of the acquisitions department in obtaining monographic titles in the French language through American and foreign dealers and the degree of success that these dealers have in supplying the requested titles. The study included a literature survey and an analysis of purchase orders issued by Middleton Library. Interviews were conducted with persons representing a cross-section of academic libraries, including bibliographers responsible for French language acquisitions and acquisitions librarians. American dealers in French publications and American representatives of foreign dealers in this country were also interviewed. The results indicate that the American library should use a dealer, domestic or foreign (seemingly both provide equal service) for firm orders, and should place these orders in a timely manner to avoid sending for titles that have gone out of print. Information on approval plans is inconclusive.
