Systems theory can be used to illustrate the behavioral sciences and their component levels: the biophysical, intrapsychic, interpersonal group, family, intergroup, social, and cultural. Although traditional academic disciplines overlap, there is a body of literature relevant to each component level. The searcher must first determine which level(s) is most relevant to the user's request before deciding which index(es) or database(s) to use. Other factors in the decision include the user's needs (comprehensiveness, currentness, and types of relevant material) and the searcher's resources (efficiency).
