An important collection of books and manuscripts pertaining to the archaeology and ethnography and the Indians of Mexico and northern Central America is housed at Tozzer Library (formerly the library of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology), Harvard University. The collection includes more than 200 items representing primary linguistic and historical material for some thirty-two indegenous languages of Middle America. Religious tracts, grammars, and vocabularies are the most frequent forms represented. This paper reviews the contributions made by two twentieth century bibliophiles, Charles P. Bowditch and William E. Gates, to the origin and development of this collection. |
