Age as a causal variable is discussed in terms of structure and content. It is suggested that old age is seen as a facilitative cause for behaviors consistent with the negative elderly stereotype and as an inhibitory cause for behaviors that contradict it. Examination of attributions to age suggests a wide range of underlying assumptions that should be explored. Though age may be difficult to classify using Weiner's dimensions of stability and locus, the controllability dimension appears to be very important to the meaning of aging as a causal variable. |
