This paper presents evidence from a guided survey that social class (represented by occupation and education) and lifestyle (modern living in the town of Nuku'alofa vs. traditional living in the villages) are the most important characteristics in how people regard the seriousness of social problems in Tonga. An analysis of how 438 Tongans view social problems indicates that modernists perceive social problems to be less serious than traditionalists.Those with more education and white-collar workers appear to be adjusting more easily to the changes and conflict of an agrarian kingdom in transition to a fledgling modern society. |
