ARCHITECTURAL (S)CRYPTS: IN SEARCH OF A MINOR ARCHITECTURE

Title: ARCHITECTURAL (S)CRYPTS: IN SEARCH OF A MINOR ARCHITECTURE
Author: McCaw, Janet
Appeared in: Architectural theory review
Paging: Volume 4 (1999) nr. 1 pages 19-33
Year: 1999-04
Contents: This paper examines two theories of textual architecture that have arisen from the work of Derrida: the first devebped by Peter Eisenman, the second by Jennifer Bloomer. Both claim that their constructs are “critical”, but it is arguable that they are critical of the architectural orthodoxy, not the broader socio-political issues that motivated Derrida. The “search” in this paper is for a contemporary socio-political polemic for architecture. One possibility, which this paper supports, is a “minor architecture”; a model of practice theorised in passing by Bloomer. The paper concludes by proposing that the architectural installations of Tadashi Kawamata are a minor architecture which challenge all architectures collusions with power.
