A management plan has been developed for the Inland Bays which is a major coastal estuary. Eutrophication and closure of shellfish areas are two major water quality problems in the Inland Bays. The largest source of nutrients entering the bays is from nonpoint sources. Agriculture is the largest contributor of nitrogen and phosphorus. Best Management practices (BMP's) such as manure nutrient analysis, calibration of manure spreaders, timing of application and applying only enough nitrogen to be removed by the crop are being emphasized to make more efficient use of nutrients in poultry manure and commercial fertilizer. Erosion and runoff control BMP's would have little effect on reducing nitrogen and phosphorus loads to the bays because of the porous soils. |
