'System' is a highly pervasive concept in the biological sciences and and yet its value as an integrative idea is both undervalued and underexploited. Part of the reason for this is that people have great difficulty using its organizational properties and hence more time is spent on what differentiates biosystems than on their isomorphic details. This presents a serious challenge to educationalists and the work reported in this paper was an attempt to explore some ways forward. Biosystems are complex organizations and any attempt to analyse students' understanding, and the more general area associated with biological categorization, requires a multidisciplinary approach. The work reported in this paper, which includes empirical investigations and a broader discussion, sought to investigate the problem in this way. |
