Previous studies on the penetrating filaments of Sphacelaria bipinnata (Kutz.) Sauv. are reviewed and examination made of sections through fragments of the host plant, Halidrys siliquosa (L.) Lyngb., bearing the endophyte. Germinating sporelings are found to produce penetrating filaments as soon as growth commences, suggesting bipolar germination of the spore. Mature tufts are found to produce new penetrating filaments and it is suggested that these tufts are produced from stoloniferous outgrowths during the spread of S. bipinnata over the host surface. It is suggested that physical support is the only benefit gained by the endophyte from its association with the host plant. |
