A species of Aulacodiscus from coastal waters off Masulipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, has been investigated in the light and electron microscopes. Further details of the valve and girdle band structure of the genus have been revealed. The valve is loculate with a finely porose outer plate and a plain inner plate with a large central aperture. The species has been compared with related species contained on slides in the British Museum (Nat. Hist.) and the relationship of the taxa is discussed. The value of scanning electron microscopy in elucidating the nature of the submarginal processes and their internal openings is emphasised. The species is designated A. amherstia sp. nov. |
