Using a Repertory Grid technique the author obtained constructs employed by individual teachers in their perceptions of their pupils, and derived from these a rank order of pupils. Correlations were made between this rank order and two ability measures, and these correlations were then compared with correlations between ability and social class. Observed classroom behaviour of pupils was also analysed in terms of the teacher's constructs. It is suggested that in the classroom situation the teacher's perception of her pupils is of greater importance than the pupils' social class. |
