In recent years there has been an upsurge in interest and research in writing, leading Scardamalia and Bereiter (1986) to state that “writing has risen from a relatively neglected school subject to an object of lively attention in both the popular and academic media”. This paper provides a synthesis of the literature as it pertains to the development of writing in young children. In particular, it addresses the question of young children's revision strategies. Four themes are explored: theory of written language, the development of writing, children's understanding of spoken and written language, and the context of writing. From an analysis of these four themes, implications for revision by young children are drawn.
