Although several political and territorial conflicts exist in Northeast Asia, post-Cold War relations in the region are the best they have been in history. Energy development projects, such as the Siberian natural gas pipeline crossing several borders, commenced with initial discussion among experts from Russia, China, Mongolia, Korea, and Japan. The potential consumption for the natural gas resources in Irkutsk, Sakha and offshore Sakhalin is great, if the supply cost is economically competitive. Since the realisation of such projects depends upon the political maturity of the countries concerned, there are obstacles to be faced, as the host country, Russia, still has unfavourable political, economic and legal conditions for foreign investors. However, if such inter-area energy supply projects were to be realised, economic and political interdependency in Northeast Asia will be enhanced. The energy balance of power between the Gulf area and East Asia will also be significantly affected.
