Evaluation of Sterility Problems of the Male 1, 2, 3 1 This investigaxtion was aided by grants from the Samuel S. Fels Fund, and the Committee on Therapeutic Research, Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry of the American Medical Association. 2 Read at annual meeting, American Urological Association, Los Angeles, Calif. May 18, 1949. 3 Note by editor. Dr. Farris was the recipient of the fourth annual award by the American Urological Association for research in the human male reproductive tract. The following citation was read by Dr. Reed M. Nesbit, chairman of the award committee:“The Association has selected Dr. Farris to be the recipient of the award for research in the human male reproductive tract. Dr. Farris is an anatomist who has interested himself in experimental biology and is presently the executive director of the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia. His researches on determining the time of ovulation in many species, including the human, have proven themselves to be of noteworthy value in the clinical management of infertility among women. For his discoveries along these lines, the National Research Foundation, in 1945, honored him with a special award. His interest in the problem of infertility among women led him to a study of fertility evaluation in men. In this field his techniques permit an objective appraisal of relative fertility so that patients can be classified and put into three categories of fertility: the sterile, the fertile, and those having a low fertility potential. His studies have provided a brightened outlook for individuals in the latter category; for he has shown how these men can arrange the^timing of insemination so as to insure a maximum fertility efficiency. In demonstrating this important phase of reproductive physiology, Dr. Farris has acted as a benefactor to many childless individuals.”
