Investigative Approaches to the Physiology of Reproduction 1 1 The experiments on which this paper is based were done under a grant from the Committee for Research in Problems of Sex, the National Research Council. , 2 2 Read at annual meeting, American Urological Association, Boston, Mass., May 28, 1948. , 3 3 Note by the editor. Dr. Huggins was selected by the American Urological Association to be the recipient of the third annual Award for Research on the Male Reproductive Tract. Dr. Reed M. Nesbit, chairman of the award committee, read the following citation: “Dr. Huggins’ eminence in scientific investigation is such that any enumeration of his researches would be gratuitous, for he has made notable contributions not only in the field of urology, but also in broader areas of biology. The scientific and academic world has recognized and paid tribute to him for many of his accomplishments, and it is particularly fitting that our society should honor him for his researches related to the physiology of reproduction in the male. These include his observations on the mechanism of ejaculation, on the physiology of the prostate, and on coagulation and liquefaction of semen and on the function of the Sertoli cells in the testis. The world is in the debt of Charles Huggins for these, as well as for his other significant contributions to our fund of scientific knowledge.”
